Never Say Never

I did something today (with the help of my two closest friends and the encouragement of many others) that I never thought I would do.

I RAN A HALF MARATHON! You read that right, Allison McNeely ran every step of 13.1 miles. As I sit here typing this my body feels every step! :)

Last July I thought it would be a good idea to give myself a challenge. I wanted to train for a half marathon. My little sister had the same interest so in different states we set out for the same goal. I managed to convince my friend Priscilla (yes, we are still friends!) to do this with me. We started running...and we couldn't run very far. We had an October date in mind, then when football started and I literally had no time to train we searched for a different date, we cam up with the last weekend in February, there is a very large race in Ft. Worth. This meant our training was to being in October. After our training started we actually found a half marathon in Dallas on February 10, so we set our eyes on that one. We found a training schedule, Priscilla did a much better job at following it than I did, but we tried. Some weeks I had absolutely no time to run during the week. With crazy ice storms and things we were way off track, but we pushed on. Over the last six weeks we increased our longest run by 1 mile a week, and the longest we ever ran was 10 miles. Can I tell you I was a nervous wreck! I knew I hadn't trained properly, but I didn't want to be a failure. Our goal was to run every step, we didn't care how long it took us. Oh, Aaron was sort of a runner anyway, he had been running quite a ways and had run 10 miles in the recent past, so he decided to go along with us, he trained on his own...he runs MUCH faster than we do.

This morning after a short 4 hours of sleep (I just couldn't sleep, Megan you were right) we headed out to White Rock Lake. The race started at 8am and off we went. I will not take you mile by mile, but I will tell you each one was a struggle. Once we reached mile 11 I just kept saying "Now we have to finish, we can't quit." WE DID IT! Here are a few pictures of us running. Please do not be fooled by our smiles, we were not doing very well by the end. These pictures were taken starting around mile 11!

I am so proud of you, Sister! And only a tiny bit jealous that your time kicked my time's booty! But I'm blaming it on my bum knee!

Hey...did you notice that we look the same when we run?

You have nothing to be ashamed of, you did awesome! YOur knee is to blame for you not being able to run as much as you would have liked, but you still accompished SO much!

I will have to go back and look at your pictures to see how you run. I do remember when I looked at your pictures I thought "Wow, we look alike."

O K. Now two of you have done this. Am I going to have to do this too? (I hope not) The most I can run is from one siede of the racketball court to the other. And then I get to stop. Definately not 13 miles!!!
WAY TO GO !! Are you going to run a few more before trying the full? I really am impressed you were able to run/jog the whole time. Quite an accomplishment. Yea Allison (& Megan)

Wow, I can't believe you ran 13 miles!! I'm soooooo impressed. We tried calling you last night but our phone line was dead. We think the rain caused some problems.

Did Kevin follow you on his bike to cheer you on your way?

That is a great accomplishment Allison! I've only run one 10K and at the finish line vowed that I'd never do that again! Good for you!!! Congratulations! I'm so proud of you!
